Setting And Achieving Goals

Setting And Achieving GoalsA big part of getting anywhere in life is setting goals for yourself. These goals work both as motivation and as major milestones for you as you stay on your journey, allowing you some standard by which to determine if you are where you wanted to be. The same principle that applies to your goals in life should also be carried into your small business. You need these goals in order to stay focused on your task of growth and permanent self management. The following are some guidelines when it comes to setting and achieving goals for your business.

Be Flexible, But Don’t Go Around In Circles

One problem that many goal setters have is that they set themselves a certain goal and then become so focused on that goal that they become rigid. If these people don’t reach that goal in a proscribed manner, they will break. It’s important to keep your eye on the goal, but that doesn’t always mean that you have to travel in a straight line. There are plenty of ways to achieve the same end result, so if you want to try something new to get to that goal, you should have the adaptability to do so.

Know The Difference Between A Goal And A Commitment

This is an important differentiation, one which not everyone is capable of making. A goal is the end result that you are striving for, but a commitment is a step towards achieving your overall goal. Goals are where you want to be, commitments the footsteps that will take you there. It’s easy to stretch this point just a bit further and point out that the best steps are small steps, so make your commitments small ones so that you don’t get overwhelmed with strides that are simply too long. Set your goals high, but make sure that the rungs of the ladder are reasonably spaced!

Only Make Commitments When You Know You Can Follow Through

A lot of us will tend to be “yes” people, after all, everyone likes someone who always seems willing to help. What no one can abide, though, is someone who shirks his or her commitments. In your business, don’t make commitments that you know you might not follow through with due either to a lack of skill or a lack of interest. Again, remember that there is more than one way to achieve your goal, and it might be that all you need to do is think through an alternate path in order to get yourself where you want to be. Above all, be someone who can say “no”. If you are considering making a commitment, make sure that it is one that you are willing and able to commit to.

Goals and Time

You want some flexibility with your goals, but not too much. One way to make that your goals can be examined is to set a time frame around them, so that they don’t just stretch on indefinitely. A good time frame should also allow you the ability to perform early reviews; say, one week before a month-end goal is about to be reached, do a quick review. How close are you to achieving that goal? If you aren’t close, is there anything you can do to make that complete that goal in the time you have left?

Once you make regular goals a part of your business mentality, they will become habit. You will begin to meet these goals on a regular basis, and once this happens it will be time to start challenging yourself and rising to new levels.
